Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig literally shrink themselves in 'Downsizing'

Downsizing

Paramount Pictures has released the trailer for the sci-fi comedy Downsizing.

Our own Ryland Aldrich just saw it in Toronto: "Here Damon plays a man who shrinks himself to a few inches tall to join the popular movement of people reducing their size ostensibly to save the planet (but perhaps more accurately to indulge in their over consumptive impulses with less guilt)".

The trailer presents "downsizing" as a Lilliputian Utopia, but there also come major risks, such as inclement weather, hungry animals and the occasional oversized shoe. We've got the best houses, the best restaurants. His $52,000 in savings is the equivalent of $12.5 million in Leisure Land, and he's able to buy himself a mansion. Paul (Matt Damon) and his wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) have been going through some financial difficulties, but feel that they can make the best of their future by shrinking themselves and moving to Leisureland, the new downsized society. From director Alexander Payne, the movie has a star-studded cast which is supported by Christoph Waltz, Alec Baldwin and Neil Patrick Harris among others. "I don't want it to sound too much like a political movie".

Payne has won Oscars twice for his screenplays-first for Sideways and then The Descendants-and Downsizing will be his first foray into science fiction.

Having premiered at the 74th Venice Film Festival on August 30th, Downsizing is set to be released on December 22nd.
