Manchester City v Liverpool

Neil Custis says Guardiola's complex tactics are affecting City's progress

The Anfield Wrap panelist John Gibbons says Philippe Coutinho could be in for a challenge winning back Liverpool fans when he returns to the fold.

The Liverpool manager must now bring Coutinho back into the fold and potentially risks upsetting those who have played well in the Brazilian's absence.

Jurgen Klopp has all but confirmed that Philippe Coutinho will not be involved when Liverpool travel to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday (9 September) to take on Manchester City when the Premier League season resumes after the global break.

The 25-year-old, who tried and failed to manoeuvre a switch to Barcelona this summer, reported for training at Melwood on Thursday after returning from worldwide duty.

One of Liverpool's most important players, Coutinho was adamant on a move to Barcelona and even handed in a transfer request.

He scored in a 2-0 World Cup qualifier win over Ecuador last Friday, and also came on during Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Colombia.

Oh, yeah - and Ilkay Gundogan is still recovering from his famously-mourned death injury last season. He made a huge effort, our physios worked a lot to take care of him, so the last seven, eight, nine games of the season he played without problem for 90 mins.

However, the German said the playmaker would not feature in he lunch-time kick-off at the Etihad.

"Nothing that I'm aware of was unforgivable", Klopp said."It wasn't clear, it was not an easy time, but that is the transfer window and this is the only time when people can make transfers."I think we handled it really well".

Liverpool may have drawn their opening game against Watford but Klopp's men have been class since then; winning every game we've played.

"We always have the same decision to make, 'does he need training or can he play?' and all that stuff".

"We don't really know what Oxlade-Chamberlain's best position is, as he has been used at wing-back, in wide roles and attacking roles in recent years at Arsenal".

"He visualised that he will play more than here".

"They were fantastic at Bournemouth and we celebrated a bit together at the end and now I want to give them my best the whole season".

Former Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling is suspended but right-back Kyle Walker is available again after his one-match ban. Pep Guardioala has assembled talented players but they have been far from convincing so far.
