Indiana National Guard deploying 100 to Florida as Irma nears

The Michigan National Guard helped with relief efforts in Hurricane Harvey as well

"States do a lot of work", said William Brock Long, FEMA administrator, last week in an interview on ABC's "This Week" after Hurricane Harvey hit and preparations for Hurricane Irma were under way.

A massive but weakened Hurricane Irma zeroed in on the Tampa Bay region early Monday after hammering much of Florida with roof-ripping winds, gushing floodwaters and widespread power outages.

The Ohio Guard's mission will be varied and could include tasks such as providing security alongside Florida law enforcement officers and helping stranded people get to shelters, Bartman said.

The support is provided to Florida and Texas under an Emergency Management Assistance Compact, known as EMAC, an agreement executed previously between all 50 states, two territories, and the District of Columbia, to assist one another in times of crisis.

The New York Air National Guard's 105th Airlift Wing also moved a Joint Incident Site Communications Capability (JISCC) system to MS on Sunday, Sept. 10.

"The National Guard stands trained and prepared to assist authorities protect lives and property", said Maj. The NYS Incident Management Team is now assisting in response and recovery operations related to Hurricane Harvey in Harris County (Houston) and Chambers County.

Headquartered in Camp Douglas, the Red Arrow was formed 100 years ago for World War I and is the state's largest unit, with companies and detachments spread throughout Wisconsin as well as one battalion in MI.
