In their study, published in the journal PLOS One in August, they said as many as 500 human cases are expected to strike the province. Twenty-two cases of West Nile have been reported this year in Utah, resulting in one death in Salt Lake County.

The CCCHD says mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. Avoid mosquito bites by limiting outdoor activities during the times of high mosquito activity at dusk and dawn.

The news comes after researchers at Brock University predicted an outbreak of West Nile cases in Ontario this summer.

He said this is a reminder that West Nile is still out there.

Mosquitoes began testing positive for West Nile in Ada County in July; more and more have been found since, across the county.

The primary way people get West Nile virus is through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can lead to severe fever, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord).

Health officials are urging residents to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites by wearing long trousers and shirts at dawn and dusk, wear light colored clothing and use an EPA-registered mosquito repellent.
