Dredger sank after collision with tanker, 5 missing, Singapore Straits

Their vessel collided with an Indonesian tanker, Kartika Segara. The dredger JBB De Rong 19 was close behind off the Bina's port quarter; the tanker did not appear to alter her course or speed, and she struck the dredger on the starboard side at 0038.

MPA said that search and rescue operations for the three remaining missing seafarers were ongoing.

Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority, which is leading the rescue effort, said in a statement that "divers have recovered two bodies out of the five missing crew", and the search for those still missing was continuing.

Two seafarers are dead, seven have been hospitalized and three are missing after a collision between a dredger and a product tanker off Singapore.

Five crew members are missing and seven more are being treated for injuries after a dredger collided with an oil tanker in Singapore waters on Wednesday morning.

The MPA said in a statement that VTS operators had warned Kartika Segara and JBB de Rong 19 of the impending risk of collision, and both vessels had acknowledged receipt of the call. Five crew remain unaccounted for.

Shipping operations in the area were not affected by the incident. It was transiting the westbound lane while the tanker was departing Singapore joining the eastbound lane of the Traffic Separation Scheme in the Singapore Strait when the incident occurred.

Wednesday morning's collision follows the one on August 21, when the United States warship USS John S. McCain collided with a merchant vessel in Singapore territorial waters near Pedra Branca.

In addition, a Republic of Singapore Air Force Super Puma helicopter began an aerial search at 7 a.m.

The accident around the busy Singapore Strait occurred just weeks after a deadly collision involving a USA warship in the same area.

Ten US sailors were found dead inside flooded compartments after the collision, the latest accident involving an American warship in Asian waters.
