Today marks the 16th anniversary of 9/11.

"In Orange County, we lost 43 people, many of them firefighters", the county executive recalled.

When planes hit the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, Father Mychal Judge ran into the North Tower alongside the firemen he served.

The Museum honors the almost 3,000 victims of these attacks and all those who risked their lives to save others. (There is a memorial to Fr Judge situated at Keshcarrigan).

Many people who were toddlers or young children at the time, are now young adults and can only access the story of 9/11 through the annals of history.

On the 16th anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 terror attacks, the names of the almost 3,000 lives lost were read at the National September 11 Memorial Museum. Four US commercial jets had been hijacked by 19 terrorists who smashed two planes into the twin towers and two others were crashed in Washington D.C. and in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. This included the 47-story 7 World Trade Center tower, as well as significant damage to ten other large surrounding structures. "Though we can never erase your pain, or bring back those you lost, we can honor their sacrifice by pledging our resolve to do whatever we must to keep our people safe", the President said outside the Pentagon, where a giant American flag was hung near the point where a hijacked jetliner was intentionally crashed into the building, killing 184 people.

Almost 3,000 people were killed on that day in 2001, 343 of which were New York City firefighters, and 23 NYPD officers.
