Templeton High students find understanding for 9/11 remembrance after stair climb

Hundreds of firefighters climb to remember 9/11 heroes

To honor those who ran toward the danger to save others, North Carolina first responders did a 110-floor stair climb in Charlotte.

This is how the New York Fire Department had to climb the World Trade Tower sixteen years ago.

All climbers wore the name and picture of a hero they were climbing for. The next year, 12 firefighters from four area departments did the climb.

The event was held at William R. Snodgrass Tennessee Tower in downtown Nashville, where 343 firefighters climbed 110 stories in remembrance of the 343 NY firefighters who died September 11, 2001 at the Twin Towers. It's a good way pay tribute to them. You become, Michael Sheltra said it best, you become a part of a family nobody wants to be a part of. "Most of them knew they wouldn't come out".

"I felt compelled to do something, so I grabbed my weapon and helmet and went to find a staircase in a building and climbed the equivalent of 110 stories", he said.

The first such climb was done September 11, 2005 when five Colorado firefighters met at a high-rise to walk up 110 flights of stairs in memory of those killed in the attacks.

Colorado's stair climb is one of the largest and most well-attended in the country, according to West Metro Fire.
