Nordstrom's New Concept Store Is a Seinfeldian Way of Doing Business

More than anything, Nordstrom Local is service-oriented, and in addition to styling services, customers have access to the retailer's other amenities like Trunk Club styling, Buy Online, Pick-Up In-Store, onsite alterations and tailoring, same-day delivery, and curbside delivery. Instead customers will be served by "personal stylists" who will help them choose the apparel they want and then order it online. Complete purchases can also be delivered to the customer's vehicle via the store's "Curbside Pickup" program. Nike's recently opened store in NY has a basketball court where you can test out Nike shoes, and a treadmill that simulates different outdoor runs while also analyzing your gait.

Such retailers include the likes of Target (tgt), which is focusing those efforts on city centers, and Kohl's (kss) and Sears (shld) which are shrinking many existing stores.

"Nordstrom Local" locations will be small, neighborhood service stores with no clothing in stock- "the first downscaling of the department store concept" in the US, according to one expert.

The new Nordstrom store is only a concept and it is set to open on October 3. The name of this new concept store is Nordstrom Local. The company will continue to open traditional department stores, too.

"We'll follow the pace of our customers", the company said in response to an e-mail from the Free Press asking whether any stores like this were slated for MI.

As retailers consider how to best use their physical spaces in a digital world, Nordstrom is going "local", debuting a small-format retail concept that offers all sorts of personal services, but has no dedicated inventory. At Bonobos, shopper tries on clothing and orders it online. Department stores in particular have too many stores, and those stores tend to be huge, making them costly to stock and maintain. It will have a 3,000 square-foot footprint, which is a fraction of the average 140,000 square-foot size of its 121 department stores.

"Finding new ways to engage with customers on their terms is more important to us now than ever", Shea Jensen, Nordstrom's senior vice president of customer experience, said in a statement.

"We know there are more and more demands on a customer's time and we wanted to offer our best services in a convenient location to meet their shopping needs", Jensen said.
