Linebacker Reuben Foster suffered high ankle sprain

It looks like former Alabama LB and current San Francisco 49ers rookie LB Reuben Foster will miss time with an ankle injury.

"Looking back at all of them, the first one is the one I regretted, when it was fourth and 4", Shanahan said Monday during his day-after-game press conference. "And if (the side judge) was here, I would apologize to him now. I was just frustrated", Shanahan said. Following a run-in with Carolina Panthers lineman Matt Kalil late in the first quarter, Foster grabbed at his lower right ankle and fans feared the worst. "I've learned the hard way, so I try not to (argue)".

"And if he (Cruz) was here, I would apologize to him now", Shanahan said. "When you have those opportunities and you take them and you just come up a little bit short, when you're going against a good team like that, especially the defense that they have, the way they can control the ball, it's tough to overcome. I think we're all disappointed because there was a number of times that we could have had a chance to be in that game and we just came up short".

Luckily for the 49ers, Foster's injury was far less severe than it originally appeared. They would have had another chance, trailing 23-0, but Shanahan did not get a timeout called before a fourth-and-1 opportunity.

"But, I've got a lot of respect for those guys".

The long-developing play had Newton sitting in the pocket for a decent amount of time, and it's worth noting that the offensive line held up well against a stout 49ers' front seven. I had a lot confidence that we would and it just didn't work out. Laken Tomlinson is the top candidate to enter the starting lineup.

The 49ers are going to have to block more effectively if they want to get Kyle Shanahan's offense off the ground.

"He's a smart guy. I've made that mistake before", Shanahan said Monday.

Foster was carted to the locker room where, among other things, team doctors examined him for a broken tibia.

"He'll have more reps this week now being two weeks in a row of him getting those reps".
