Hurricane Jose strengthens to a Category 2 storm

That string of islands was slammed by Irma Wednesday and the extent of the damage is not yet clear.

Hurricane warnings have now been issued for Barbuda and Anguilla, which were hard-hit by Irma when it was at its peak intensity with 185 miles per hour winds. At least eight people died in St. Martin, and at least 21 others were injured.

"We are very anxious about Hurricane Jose", Gaston Browne, prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda, told The Washington Post.

A third tropical system was named Tropical Storm Katia early this morning.

Irma is forecast to hit the Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico later this week.

Hurricane and tropical-storm watches are likely in the Leeward Islands later Thursday. Gov. Rick Scott has already declared a state of emergency to give counties and cities time to prepare. The state is shutting down nuclear power plants, and NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral has closed. To put those speeds in comparison, the constant winds of hurricane Irma are equivalent to an EF-4 tornado.

There is no concern about flooding at this point, Head said. "The latest estimate shows that FEMA has enough to get through Saturday", an official told CNN.

Major Hurricane Irma is continuing to move along the islands south of Florida, and local forecasters expect it may lead to swells and rip currents off the North Carolina coast. Fortunately, it looks like Katia will avoid the Texas coastline which just took a beating from Hurricane Harvey a couple of weeks ago. You can see Tropical Storm Katia on the left near the Gulf of Mexico, Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean, and Tropical Storm Jose farther east. It's about 400 miles southeast of Miami, Florida. "If we don't, it could be devastating".

Meanwhile, both Jose and Katia became hurricanes, marking the first time since September 2010 that there are three hurricanes in the Atlantic simultaneously.

The eye of the storm will make landfall Sunday morning. Category 5 Hurricane Irma is churning in the Caribbean and Hurricane Jose formed Wednesday in the open waters of the Atlantic. Storms of Category 3 and above are defined as major hurricanes.

Maximum sustained winds are near 155 miles per hour with higher gusts.

The government of Mexico previously issued a hurricane warning for the coast of Mexico from Cabo Rojo to Laguna Verde, the NHC said.

After NOAA updated its hurricane outlook, FEMA Administrator Brock Long said at the time, "Today's updated outlook underscores the need for everyone to know their true vulnerabilities to storms and storm surge". Jose is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
