1 killed, 11 injured in flyover collapse in Bhubaneswar

1 person was buried dead and more than 15 others were injured when a frail portion of an under construction railway flyover bridge collapsed in Bomikhal area of Odisha's capital Bhubaneshwar.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in a tweet blamed the flyover collapse on poor quality work. Locals said two persons were suspected to have been trapped in the debris.

Four sniffer dogs, two NDRF teams comprising of 44 jawans, ODRAF team and fire brigade officials have been deployed to carry out rescue operation at the site.

Meanwhile, the DGP Odisha said that the rescue work is nearly over.

Patnaik, who was crossing the road on a scooter with his daughter riding pillion died on the spot while his 12-year-old daughter Sheetal is being treated at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

As quoted by a report in The Times of India, DCP Satyabrata Bhoi said that the rescue operation is being monitored closely.

"I'm deeply shocked over this unfortunate incident".

Patnaik, who announced payment of Rs. 5 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased, said that the treatment cost of the inured persons will be borne by the State government.

A high-level inquiry has been ordered into the mishap.

A communication from the chief minister's office (CMO) said stern action will be taken against those found guilty (both from construction firm and officials from the works department) during the course of the investigation.

"We have been complaining about the sub-standard work of the flyover by Panda Infrastructures. This is a huge scam and needs to be investigated by CBI", said BJP vice president Sameer Mohanty. Mr Routray also sought a CBI probe into the flyover collapse.
