Wellesley sportswriter relives "Drive for Five" in super new Patriots book

The New York Giants

It was back before the start of training camp, with expectations high, that Julian Edelman labeled talk of a flawless 19-0 New England Patriots season as "stupid".

The 2017 Patriots begin their journey Thursday night trying to avoid being upended by the Chiefs, the AFC's No. 2 playoff seed from last season who enter as nine-point underdogs. Usually gives Bill Belichick some fits but yet it's hard to bet against the patriots especially they are 40 in season openers after winning a Super Bowl. His biggest move came with trading the 32nd and 103rd picks in the draft to New Orleans for Brandin Cooks, a 23-year-old speedster receiver straight out of Tom Brady's dreams. Replacing him will be Phillip Dorsett, who spent the last two seasons with the Colts, was acquired in the last week to replace Edelman.

"They're very explosive and really force the ball out of your hands quick because they get a good rush", Brady said.

As much as any Pats fan would like to see 19-0, that's just not going to happen.

A big part of the Kansas City's 12-4 record last [regular] season can be directly connected to its league-leading 33 takeaways, allowing the Chiefs to finish the season No. 1 with a +16 turnover ratio, tied with Oakland. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.

The crowd reveled in the highlights from the Super Bowl, and they booed lustily when Goodell was briefly shown yucking it up with Chiefs owner Clark Hunt on the sideline during warmups. If you're in this business that's what you thrive on. Brady was a rookie who played in just one game in mop-up duty.

Brady, growing up in the San Francisco area, had a chance to watch two of the best quarterbacks ever play for the 49ers in that era. "And once you get out there and start going, those things calm down". We recently asked Logan Jakubajtys, Pats expert at Chowder and Champions, to tell us more about how the Patriots are feeling heading into Week 1.

He added that he is secure in the ways he goes about protecting himself from injury on the field.

"To have the opportunity to come out and play every day is something I always cherish", said Brady.

Brady, aging like a fine wine, is 101-17 at Gillette, where Belichick is a mere 110-26.

Did you know Brady is a best-selling author now, too?

New England failed twice in the first quarter on short-yardage runs, by Gillislee and Super Bowl hero James White, and again in the fourth period, by Gillislee. He is taking the roster spot of Shea McClellin, who was placed on injured reserve but is a candidate to return during the season.

Neither Valentine nor Patriots offensive tackle Cameron Fleming practiced Monday, while tight end Travis Kelce was among those limited for the Chiefs. From roughly 2005 to 2015, no team was more popular to bet against than the Raiders, as the franchise suffered through a decade of futility with no winning seasons.

The Patriots kick off the new season by hosting the Kansas City Chiefs at their Foxborough home - live on Sky Sports Action from 1.20am in the early hours of Friday morning.

What's also a distant memory is the unfamiliar situation he found himself in last season when he was forced to sit out the first four games of 2016 after accepting his four-game "Deflategate" punishment.
