Benitez to miss Newcastle´s Swansea trip after surgery

Benitez missed the Premier League trip to Swansea as he recovered from an operation but was well enough to issue instructions to his skipper, who responded with a match-winning performance at both ends.

The team will be led by Rafa's coaching staff, who will be in contact with the manager throughout matchday.

"After the game Rafa rang and he has congratulated everybody, especially the players because they have done a massive job".

"We all wanted to win for the manager and we did that".

The winger has been out since February with an Achilles injury, however, he has since returned to training, but it is thought the fixture has come too quickly for him.

But Lascelles raced back to clear off the line and the centre back went from match-saver to match victor when he headed home Matt Ritchie's corner.

"With zonal marking, I am not a fan", said the 23-year-old.

"16 minutes later the 6'3" center back rose highest on a Matt Ritchie corner to thump a header past Swansea's Lukasz Fabianski. We have to keep our heads up. On another day we could have got something out of it.

The match was nothing like as enjoyable for Paul Clement. I'm not quite sure why it turned out like that.

"The margin of the defeat was small and decided by a set play but overall we weren't at the level I expect".

"Then there was a performance like this". 'I was delighted to see only a yellow card.

Clement has, however, been given some good news about who he can select for their fixture with Newcastle, after Jordan Ayew was cleared to be involved.

"It didn't quite happen for him a year ago for Bayern, which can happen; a young player moving country, different language, a big club and a lot of expectation, but he is a talent and the Premier League will suit him because he's an aggressive player", the United legend explained.

The visitors were quick out of the blocks, and it was fast-paced start as they forced the Swans to play quickly - which prevented us from settling into a good passing rhythm.
