Zambia stun Algeria on road to Russian Federation 2018

Success gave the southern Africa nation a glimmer of hope in a mini-league being dominated by Nigeria, which thrashed African champion Cameroon 4-0 in Uyo Friday.

Coach Nyirenda has put his hopes on young players that he picked from Zambia Under-20 stars who won the 2017 U20 AFCON and also reached the quarterfinals of the 2017 Federation Internationale de Football Association U20 World Cup in South Korea.

Despite losing to Zambia 1-0 at home, Alcaraz told Zambians not to nurse the hope of upstaging Nigeria in Uyo.

Zambia's win also saw Algeria got eliminated alongside Cameroon in the race to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Zambia celebrate one of their goals against Algeria at the weekend.

If, by whatever means the Zambians are able to equal the goals difference, Nigeria can still go through with a comfortable goals scored which is now 10 compared to Zambia's 6.

Zambia is struggling in the qualifiers placed third with one point, seven points behind leaders Nigeria.

Rabson Tembo, another soccer fan said the inclusion of under-20 national soccer team players has boosted the senior team's performance in the last two matches against Algeria where the junior players scored and impressed with their performance.

Now, they find themselves staring into the abyss after Brian Mwila's double and Enock Mwepu's late strike handed them a 3-1 defeat in Lusaka.

And their coach declared: "Now we will focus on Nigeria". If that is done, then there will not be a need for all the big grammars and everybody can return their calculators to where they came from.

I hope your fears are allayed now.

Zambia overcame conceding a goal and having a player sent off inside 60 seconds to score a historic 3-1 World Cup qualifying victory over Algeria in Lusaka Saturday.
