Woman slips out of handcuffs, takes police cruiser for joy ride

Video Suspect steals police car in Texas

While police were distracted, Sponsler escaped her handcuffs, hopped over the divider, and drove off with the squad vehicle.

Dashcam footage showed Sponsler speeding away as she weaved in between other officers who tried to stop her.

According to The Washington Post, the 33-year-old Sponsler was initially detained for suspicion of shoplifting.

Seconds later, she takes off in the officer's vehicle.

This is where things get interesting.

"After officers ran her down on foot, Sponsler was cuffed behind her back and seat belted into a patrol unit", police wrote on the department's Facebook page.

Sponsler went after the officer's shotgun a few times amid the interest yet it was "mechanically bolted", police said.

"Sponsler almost went head on with two Lufkin officers and a Huntington constable during the pursuit". Now she faces escape causing serious bodily injury, aggravated assault against a public servant, evading arrest with a vehicle, unauthorized use of a vehicle and possession of a controlled substance charges.

Salute to her savagery, and for the Lufkin PD for sharing this insane clip. The high-speed chase that ensued lasted over 20 minutes and reached 100 miles per hour before she finally crashed and was apprehended.

Before officers even realize what's happening, Sponsler takes off down the street in the police vehicle.

Officers have since installed a device between the front and back seats of all marked vehicles in effort to avoid a similar situation.

"We are fortunate that no one was hurt during the incident", Lufkin Police Assistant Chief David Thomas said. She was given an $18,000. She was also arrested on February 9, 2015, for unauthorized use of a vehicle, and credit- or debit card abuse.
