TRINITY COLLEGE DUBLIN has climbed 14 places in the World University Rankings, and is now rated as 117th best in the world in the Times Higher Education list published today.

The latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings saw the university ranked at number 192 - down from last year's ranking of 165.

The other five universities are Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Petronas, ranked 601-800.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings list the top 1,000 universities in the world.

Within the United Kingdom, the university was ranked 67 out of 130, based on its teaching, research, knowledge transfer and worldwide outlook.

Oxford came first in the rankings for the second year running, with Cambridge rising from fourth to second.

The University of Cambridge was ranked second, while Stanford University and the California Institute of Technology ranked equal third. For the first time, two institutions ranked in the top 30 with Peking University at 29 and Tsinghua University at 30. Almost half (29 out of 62) of the US institutions in the top 200 saw their rankings fall, largely due to a lack of state and federal support.

IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur were among the top best educational institutes in India past year.

However, this year's results also reflect a growing gap between the UK's elite universities and those placed lower down.

Johns Hopkins' upward move in the new ranking bucked a downward trend for USA universities, THE said. In the 2018 ranking list, the top five Indian schools are IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IISc and IIT Kharagpur.
