Sharapova was pushed to three sets in each of the opening two rounds, beating Simona Halep and Timea Babos, and she again looked rusty against Kenin.

Sporting a leather-collared black dress encrusted with crystal, Sharapova made a rock star entrance on a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium to close the night session.

Schwartzman will take on either France's Lucas Pouille or Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin for a quarter-final spot. The Spaniard has yet to lose a set at Flushing Meadows this year and has dropped only nine games.

World number one Nadal, meanwhile, saw off Japan's world 121 Taro Daniel 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 after being blown off court in the first set.

"(It's) unfair to all these players who do it the right way and are true", she added.

She said very little, but her message was clear: "My thoughts on that are very public". Prime among them is Canadian teen Denis Shapovalov, who became the youngest man since 1989 into the US Open last 16.

Former world No. 1 Wozniacki and 30-year-old Sharapova have a history, with the Dane critical of the way the Russian's return to professional tennis at a tournament in Stuttgart in April was handled. Kenin handled the pressure of serving to stay in the set brilliantly to draw level at 5-5.

Kenin said she is hoping she can build off the performance. The former world number one seemed to have found her pace, not even giving up a point as she closed a flawless game with an ace to extend her lead to 3-0.

'I just felt like I wasn't hitting the ball that well in the beginning, but I got better as the match went on'.

Pliskova was the runner-up a year ago and needs to get back to the final to remain atop the WTA ranking.

"But someone who comes back from a drug sentence, performance-enhancing drugs, and then all of the sudden gets to play every single match on Center Court, I think that's a questionable thing to do".
