Patriots Trade Jacoby Brissett To Colts For Phillip Dorsett

Patriots trade Jacoby Brissett to Indianapolis Colts, reports says

Dorsett never panned out the way the Colts had hoped, but the Colts coaching staff is not the Patriots coaching staff, by any stretch of the imagination.

The Indianapolis Colts say they knew all along that there was a possibility that starting quarterback Andrew Luck could miss some time in the regular season. Along with offseason trade acquisition of Brandin Cooks, the Patriots receiving corps also will include Danny Amendola, Chris Hogan and Malcolm Mitchell. The Super Bowl champion Patriots dealt Jacoby Brissett, who was clearly their third quarterback, to the Indianapolis Colts for wide receiver Phillip Dorsett.

The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Brissett, 23, is coming off perhaps one of the greatest preseason performances by a quarterback in National Football League history on Thursday, as he completed 28-of-39 passes for 341 yards with four touchdowns and an interception - adding a rushing touchdown, as well - in the Patriots' 40-38 loss to the New York Giants at Gillette Stadium. From how the Colts usually operate, expect Tolzien to start next Sunday, while Brissett gets comfortable with the playbook and new environment.

In the short, although not immediate future, Brissett has the ability to potentially push Tolzien in Luck's absence and should be a long-term upgrade to both the latter and Morris as the primary backup quarterback for the Colts going forward.

However, with Tom Brady entrenched as the starter in New England and with Jimmy Garoppolo firmly established behind him, there wasn't much of a need for Brissett as the 3rd quarterback in New England. Brissett completed 34-of-55 passes for 400 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Dorsett was drafted by the Colts in the first-round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He has 51 career receptions for 753 yards and three touchdowns in 26 games (seven starts).

Brissett continued to dig into the Giants' lead by rushing for a touchdown on his own...

New England lost wide receiver Julian Edelman to a torn ACL in the team's third preseason game.
