"We have seen an unusually high amount of West Nile Virus activity this season", said Carl Doud, director of the Midland County Mosquito Control.

The adult is the first person this year to be infected with the virus. Mosquitoes get the virus when they feed on infected birds.

Older residents and those with certain medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease and people who have received organ transplants, are at greater risk of developing severe illness and complications.

The panel is not for research but diagnostic developers can use the samples to determine if their tests are effective at distinguishing recent Zika infection from West Nile or dengue virus infection.

Crews from a pest management company are treating Keene's storm drainage system to kill mosquito larvae after officials learned this week that a sample of mosquitoes from the city tested positive for West Nile virus.

Mosquitos carrying the West Nile virus were discovered in town during a series of tests last week, according to the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. None have tested positive in Dubois County. The other two batches came from Manchester, and were collected July 31 and Aug 1. Unfortunately, researchers have been having trouble creating this kind of test "because antibodies produced by the body to fight Zika virus are hard to differentiate from antibodies produced to fight related viruses, such as dengue and West Nile virus". Seasonal outbreaks often occur in local areas that can vary from year to year.

So what does all this mean for us humans? The CDC reported higher number of cases during periods of abnormally high temperatures. Repellents should be used according to the label instructions.

Residents planning to spend time outdoors are reminded of the importance of preventing mosquito bites and removing sources of standing water where mosquitoes lay eggs and develop. "So, even though the kids are back at school, I need you to keep using the repellent and dumping the water".
