After a nationally televised debacle on Thursday night, Doug Marrone opened up the Jaguars QB competition.

The Jacksonville Jaguars' starting quarterback job is now open for competition after Blake Bortles' second consecutive mediocre preseason outing.

"I told them what I'm looking for is, I'm looking for someone who is going to lead this offense", Marrone said. I'm not going to sit here and BS anyone. Everyone saw it out there.

The center of the NFL's Colin Kaepernick charade has shifted from city to city, as franchises with quarterbacks who obviously aren't as good as the controversial signal-caller deflect criticism until the focus shifts to another team.

In the team's first game-against the Patriots-he completed 5-of-7 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown.

Jacksonville starting quarterback Blake Bortles was ineffective in his four series in the first half. "We don't believe what you say but you believe what you see!" However, not to be outdone, the Jaguars kicker Jason Myers missed wide right on his only extra point attempt, leaving both teams with question marks in their kicking game.

Coughlin, the Jaguars' new czar of football operations, is a man who 10 years ago, as head coach of the New York Giants, stubbornly stuck by a flailing Eli Manning - long past the point where just about everyone but the Manning family had given up on him. In 2016, Winston threw for 4,090 yards and 28 touchdowns in all 16 games for the Bucs.

Bortles and Henne will both not be on the Jaguars opening day roster next season in all likelihood, and the team will nearly certainly draft a QB in the rich 2018 draft.

"Well, it's a lot better than trying to think someone is going to be something that they're not", Marrone said.

Particularly in the short term, does Bortles get one more chance to start next week, in traditionally the only preseason game (Week 3) when starters play 2-3 quarters? This regime isn't about the future, it's about which players they feel give them the best chance to win in Houston on September 10.

For his part, Bortles surely senses the end is coming.

Unfortunately, the team is dealing with more injury problems this week.

In a division which pits them against a Texans team which has one of the best defences in the NFL, a resurgent Titans organisation and a Colts team led by Andrew Luck, the Jaguars aren't receiving a lot of national attention in the States.
