49ers rookie LB Foster limited by injury to right shoulder

San Francisco 49ers rookie linebacker Reuben Foster has a mild AC joint sprain, which is a different condition than the shoulder injury that was originally surgically repaired, according to Matt Maiocco of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.

The 49ers announced on Thursday that Foster had a sprain of the acromioclavicular joint in the same shoulder that underwent surgery earlier this year to fix a partially torn rotator cuff.

San Francisco 49ers' Reuben Foster (56) intercepts a pass intended for Denver Broncos' Jamaal Charles (28) at practice during training camp at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2017. He was drafted 31st overall after falling down the draft board amid concerns he might need a follow-up surgery on his right shoulder.

The 49ers signed linebacker Shayne Skov to a one-year deal for more depth at the position. It sure didn't keep him out of the fights that marred the start of Thursday's practice against the Denver Broncos. "He's good", when asked if Foster had sustained a serious injury.

"It's not bothering me because you've got the adrenaline rush flowing", Foster said about his ankle after Friday's exhibition win at Kansas City. The former Alabama star was an All-American in college and the Dick Butkus award victor as the best linebacker in the country. He definitely wanted to go. He's expected to take the field for Thursday's practice in a limited basis.

The 49ers said the injuries are not related.

Shanahan noted Foster's injury is common among linebackers. On Wednesday, the 49ers waived/injured inside linebackers Donavin Newsom and Jayson DiManche.
