Walmart apologizes for 'truly horrible' back-to-school gun display

Walmart sorry for 'horrible' gun display

The photograph on social media included Walmart's superhero-themed, back-to-school promotion with a gun rack in a sporting goods section.

Crowson did not specify what proof Walmart had and he did not say that the sign was placed there for a staged photo, but this seems to be what happened - by whom, we do not know.

He acknowledged only that the photo wasn't taken at a store in Evansville, Indiana, as had been originally suggested. Initially, the company apologized and said the sign was being taken down but then began to question whether it had been there at all. People were furious about the juxtaposition of the back-to-school sign and firearms.

In recent years, the United States has seen a number of deadly school shootings.

May said that she made her concerns known to store employees but was unable to find a manager.

People cried foul on Twitter and demanded an explanation from Walmart. HOW tone deaf can a corp be?,' one Twitter user asked incredulously.

That tweet, though, wasn't the first time Walmart heard about the signage situation. It should also be noted that despite its clearly insensitive sign placement, the store is not "selling its guns to schoolchildren".

In July, Wlamart was roundly denounced on social media and called racist for using the term "n****r brown" to describe a wig cap sold on its online store.

The display at a Florida store, which was was designed and created by Coca-Cola and approved by Walmart, was shown under a banner "we will never forget", with other crates stacked up to resemble the American flag. A banner reading "WE WILL NEVER FORGET" topped over the display.
