Caroline Wozniacki survived three rain delays to book her spot in the WTA Toronto tournament semi-final with a marathon 7-5, 6-7 (3/7), 6-4 victory over world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova on Friday.

The Czech's 6-2, 6-7 (4) 1-0 victory sets up a quarterfinal with Caroline Wozniacki.

Czech Lucie Safarova topped Russia's Ekaterina Makarova 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 and now awaits the victor of a round-of-16 match pitting German No. 3 seed Angelique Kerber against American Sloane Stephens.

Meanwhile, fourth-ranked Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza tamed Belgian qualifier Kirsten Flipkens 7-5, 6-2, while second seed Simona Halep defeated Wimbledon semi-finalist Magdalena Rybarikova 6-3, 6-4.

"I was just swinging for the fences", said Shapovalov, who needed a wild card to get into the tournament.

"Every time this year when it has been raining I've had a great tournament, so I thought this must be luck".

"I felt okay after the first two breaks, but after the third one (when she was up 4-1) I started to feel a little tight", Pliskova said.

The two players have not yielded an inch in the second set, which was decided in the tiebreaker. Back on the ground, Woznicki won the five following games in order to snatch the round the original to the first player in the world.

Pliskova fired five aces but won just 45 percent of her second-serve points.

Stephens is making up for lost time on the court at the Rogers Cup, though, with her four matches this week taking almost eight hours in total.

Both sets followed a similar pattern, Pliskova surging to a 5-1 lead in the first and 3-0 in second.

"I think I was maybe a little bit less exhausted towards the end", Wozniacki said.

In men's action, Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov shocked top seeded Rafael Nadal to reach the quarterfinals, spoiling the Spaniard's chances of returning to world No. 1.

"That's really the way I think".

In early doubles play, top-seeded Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina beat Lyudmyla Kichenok of Ukraine and American Nicole Melichar 6-4, 6-4. She will face the victor between France's Caroline Garcia and American qualifier Varvara Lepchenko in the third round.
