Movies which suffered ex-CBFC chief Pankaj Nihalani axe

Nihalani Sacked as CBFC Chief Prasoon Joshi Takes Over

These elements - I'm not going to name them on-record are now celebrating premature Diwali. I would do it to the best of my ability.

He refrained from commenting on Joshi being his successor.

An official statement by the I&B ministry on Friday said that Mr Joshi had been appointed as the chairperson of the CBFC for a period of three years under the Cinematograph Act. Vidya is very well known for portraying strong protagonists and has been acknowledged in the media for pioneering a change in the concept of a Hindi film heroine. I will try to take the opinion of people, who have good thoughts, as it is a new thing for me.

Here is a quick look, a timeline if you may, at Nihalani's antics over the past two and a half odd years as the head of our esteemed (pfft) CBFC. Other members reportedly include Vidya Balan, Gautami Tadimalla, Narendra Kohli, Naresh Chandra, Neil Herbert, Vivek Agnihotri, TS Nagabharana, Ramesh Patange, Vani Tripathi, Jeevitha Rajasekhar and Mihir Bhuta. Vidya Balan, it appears, has joined the board which will now be chaired by Prasoon Joshi.

Joshi has worked on a number of successful and critically acclaimed Bollywood films, such as Black, Taare Zameen Par, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Rang De Basanti, Delhi-6, and Neerja.

Joshi replaces filmmaker Pahlaj Nihalani who was appointed as CBFC Chairman in 2015. He became famous for chopping off scenes from the movies and posing problems for filmmakers. It was not allowed to release in India over its erotic content. His stint during Udta Punjab and the James Bond franchise film Spectre also made him face the heat.

Ashoke Pandit expresses his joy over Prasoon Joshi's appointment as CBFC chief. "We all, entire directors' fraternity and producers' fraternity, stand by Smritiji's decision", he further said, adding, "I'm sure the freedom of expression of a filmmaker will now be protected with Joshi coming in as a chairman". I recommended new CBFC guidelines, and ratings system, even before the Shyam Benegal Committee did.

There had apparently been major pressure on the government to remove Mr Nihalani, who had once openly declared, "I am proud to be a Modi chamcha". He comes from the advertising background and will have a modern point of view.
