Emmanuel Macron calls for peaceful outcome with North Korea

Jim Mattis' remarks followed days of escalating threats between North Korea and the US

"They discussed the need to confront the increasingly unsafe situation associated with North Korea's destabilizing and escalatory behavior،" the White House said in a statement.

"Trump reiterated to President Macron the United States' commitment to stop the North Korean nuclear menace".

Former Republican Senator Gordon Humphrey, who represented New Hampshire in the United States Senate from 1979-1990, said in a letter to New Hampshire's congressional representatives that Trump has a "seriously sick psyche" and that his "sick mind and reckless conduct could consume the lives of millions".

Comments come after phone call with Donald Trump in which both leaders agreed on need to confront 'increasingly risky situation'. But the fact that the USA and North Korea are still talking while mutually threatening each other with missile fire shows that the public drama doesn't translate to private anger or calls to action.

They agreed that North Korea must stop its provocative and escalatory behaviour, the White House said.

Trump dialed up the rhetoric early Friday, tweeting that the US military is "locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely".

Trump also reiterated their mutual commitment to denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, it added.

"Military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely", Trump tweeted before retweeting Pentagon photos of B1 bombers.

Trump's warning came after the North Korea threatened to fire ballistic missiles over Japan towards the US Pacific island of Guam.
