Android O will seal OnePlus 3/3T's update cycle

Just to be clear, OnePlus 3 is just about 14 months old and the 3T is here for only 9 months.

Recently, OnePlus held f a Q&A session where Oliver Z, Head of Product at the company, was asked some of the most commonly asked questions regarding software support for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T smartphones. However, these devices will continue to receive security updates for the "foreseeable future". Similarly OnePlus 3 (launched in June 2016) and the OnePlus 3T (November 2016), which is little over 8 months old in the market, are deprived of getting Android P series OS update. Summing it up, there will be one major update, any update after that would be security patches and individual application update support for OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T.

OnePlus doesn't really have a very impressive track record with software support in the past. Google itself has two years limit for Android updates for its own Nexus devices, after which it provides only security updates. Some hardware-reliant features found on the OnePlus 5, like the Reading Mode and DCI-P3 color gamut output, won't get passed onto the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T - the component gap is real, folks. That particular OS version, however, came with a bug that didn't allow users to play games on OnePlus 5. However, for now it seems like Android O is the end of the road as the company gives their undivided focus to the OnePlus 5 and the development of their 2018 flagship.

The news brings disappointment to users since they have invested a whole lot of money to purchase the devices. That usually means two versions of Android and accompanying point upgrades as the company is capable of providing for. The official name for Android O will be officially announced on August 21.
