Yankees outbid by Indians in Bruce deal

New York Mets Jay Bruce watches his solo home run off Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Chris Rusin during a baseball game in Denver. A person familiar with the deal says the Cleveland Indians have agreed to acquire

The Cleveland Indians were fairly quiet through the trade deadline, but sent a loud message with an August deal for outfielderJay Bruce.

Bruce has led the Mets offense this season with 29 home runs and 75 RBI. Brantley, an All-Star this year, was placed on the 10-day disabled list prior to Wednesday's series finale against Colorado with a right ankle sprain, and Chisenhall, who is in the midst of his best season in the majors, has been sidelined since July 9 with a right calf strain.

The Indians designated outfielder Daniel Robertson for assignment upon acquiring Bruce, in order to make room for him on the 40-man roster. He'll add to our group on the field and complement our team in the clubhouse.

Chris Antonetti the president of the Indians said that Bruce has been a power threat throughout his career and someone who can hit in the middle of the team's lineup and be productive.

Bruce is scheduled to earn $13 million this season, and Cleveland.com reported the Indians apparently will pay the amount remaining on his 2017 salary.

Bruce is back in a pennant race after a rough season for NY, which is 16½ games behind Washington in the NL East. They play each other 19 times a year and contend for the same National League East title. In 23 games in Cleveland, Bruce is hitting.384 with an OBP of.438 and an OPS at 1.031. The Mets being cheap likely cost them a solid deal in the long run. He is a 22-year old reliever now playing in the A ball Midwest League.

The 30-year-old Bruce arrived at Tropicana Field about an hour before Thursday night's game against the Rays.

"If it comes to the point where we have too many outfielders, good for us, because right now, we're playing two short", Francona said.

The Mets could have kept Bruce, who is eligible for free agency after the season, and extended him a qualifying offer. "We re-engaged the Mets and were able to work things out".

Ryan was a 3-4 with a 4.79 ERA for the, the Indians' Single-A team, the Lake County Captains.
