Riz Ahmed in talks to join Tom Hardy's 'Venom'

It was previously reported that Cletus Kasady/Carnage would be the film's primary antagonist, although it is unknown if that is the role Ahmed is in talks for.

Sony is hoping the success of Spider-Man: Homecoming will allow them to build out a universe of Spider-Man-related films. That gives the Venom film freedom to tell an intriguing antihero story, and to cast things however it likes. However, based on the names Venom has already signed on and the talent Sony is still targeting, we're starting to come around on the idea.

Sony hasn't commented on the speculation, and the company has previously insisted "Venom" will not be a part of the Spider-Man film franchise, but will instead be seen as a standalone movie. Additionally, whatever this role may be, other actors who read for it included Matt Smith, Pedro Pascal, and Mathias Schoenarts according to Variety's Justin Kroll.

You likely know Ahmed best from starring in the terrorism comedy Four Lions.

Although Tom Holland's Spider-Man continues to cross over between the big studio blockbusters, the Venom movie will exist completely independently of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its Web Slinger.

Ruben Fleischer ("Zombieland") is set to direct. "Venom" will be released on October 5, 2018 with a production start date of fall 2017. Though he certainly doesn't look like the original Carnage, Cletus Kasady, wouldn't it be interesting to see Ahmed on the other side of that battle?
