NY Police: Girl poured boiling water on friend's face at sleepover

11-year-old girl severely burned in sick 'hot water challenge' prank

Eleven-year-old Jamoneisha Merritt, who goes by Jamone, is in serious but stable condition with burns on her face, chest, shoulders and back.

An 11-year-old girl was badly burned after her friends allegedly poured boiling water on her during a sleepover on Monday in New York, USA. "What she did was really wrong, but it's too much right now", Panton said.

Late last month, an eight-year-old girl died from complications after she drank boiling water through a straw. She has been charged with felony assault. It's bewildering that anyone, even an 8-year-old, would think this was OK, but if they see someone do it-or pretend to do it-on YouTube, they might think it's something that can actually be done.

Jamoneisha's family has created a GoFundMe for her hospital bills and counseling sessions.

Ebony Merritt called for justice for her daughter Thursday. 'My daughter was sleeping and Jamoni poured cold water on Aniya. "The girl admitted it, "I don't like her, I wanted to do it". Her mother, Marquisia Bonner, said Ki'ari had problems breathing after a tracheotomy removed scar tissue from her windpipe. "My daughter is 12".

Jamoneisha is expected to make a full recovery. In 2012, the "cinnamon challenge" left numerous young people in need of medical attention after swallowing large quantities of dry cinnamon. The girl's mother claimed the two came up with the idea after watching a video on YouTube.

Merritt added that her daughter saw her face and was "okay with it" but is still "traumatized".

'I can't take it down.

Jamoneisha had been invited to the sleepover party Sunday night at an apartment in Concourse Village, police said.

Despite her good spirits, the girl is also in a lot of physical and emotional pain, her family said. However, Panton says she does not know what her daughter was thinking when dumping boiling water on her friend.

"She's very sad", Ebony told NY1.

'She don't understand why they did that to her. "She thought they was her friends", she told Spectrum News NY1.

"I could only be with her for a little bit, because I can't hold myself together", Yolanda told NBC.

The prank is similar to another variation of the "hot water challenge" where participants drink boiling water through a straw.
