Newborn Baby Dumped at Houston Apartment Complex

Houston man finds abandoned newborn in the bushes covered with these

A newborn baby girl is receiving medical attention after being found alone and covered in ants at an apartment complex in north Houston. A resident at the complex found the baby around 5:30 a.m. and called 911.

A man who lives in the complex told deputies that he heard a baby crying and at first thought it was a toy.

Another witness, Albert Peterson told the reporter, "I heard like a baby, like a cat cry, like, meow...", and then told his wife to call 911.

The unnamed mother is now in the custody of sheriffs and the local district attorney is now considering charges against her.

The newborn's mother, in this case, could face charges of abandoning a child, deputies said.

The baby girl is in the NICU at Texas Children's Hospital in The Woodlands and according to deputies, she is in good condition.

Peterson told KTRK it wasn't hard for authorities to find her because she was bleeding and had left a trail of bloody footprints on the ground.

THIS is the shocking moment a pedestrian stumbles on a newborn baby dumped in a bush.

"When I seen her, I seen ants and stuff all over".

Harris County Deputy Thomas Gilliland said to the station: 'Had this neighbor not been here, we'd be looking at a homicide.

Detectives knocked on the apartment's door, but the residents refused to open it. Inside they found two people, including a 21-year-old woman who admitted to being the baby's mother, according to KPRC.

Skillern reportedly took a DNA test to verify whether he's the baby's father.

The newborn is now in the custody of Texas Child Protective Services. "There's a hospital, not even a block down the road and if the mother was so anxious about the infant's safety she could've easily gone to drop off the baby". CPS has temporary custody of the child but could determine in the next weeks who the baby girl will live with.
