National Football League suspends Cowboys' Ezekiel Elliott for six games

Elliott led the NFL in total rushing yards for the 2016 season

McFadden would likely get the first chance to take the reigns after finishing fourth in the league with 1,089 yards as the lead back two seasons ago. Elliott announced that he would be appealing the suspension, something in which he has three business days to do.

The 49ers may not have to face one of the best runnings backs in the National Football League when they host the Cowboys Oct. 22. "League investigators interviewed more than a dozen witnesses, including Ms. Tiffany Thompson, who had alleged multiple instances of physical violence in July 2016, and Mr. Elliott", the league continued in their statement.

Without Elliott, one half of the Cowboys' sensational rookie tandem that helped Dallas win the NFC East last season, Prescott will have to work even harder to keep Dallas on top of a fiercely contested division. Elliott also claimed that the league "cherry picks" so-called evidence to support its conclusion while setting aside critical evidence.

The ruling potentially could put Goodell and Jones, a strong supporter of the commissioner, at odds the same way Goodell clashed with New England owner Robert Kraft over last year's four-game suspension for quarterback Tom Brady over the "Deflategate" controversy. These experts range in experience from law enforcement, judicial and public service, and other specialized subject areas.

City Attorney's office announced previous year that no charges would be filed against Elliott because of "conflicting and inconsistent information". The investigative report exceeded 160 pages.

"I am both surprised and disappointed by the NFL's decision today, and I strongly disagree with the leagues findings".

Elliott plans to appeal the suspension, his representatives said in a statement.

If the appeal is upheld, Elliott will be able to return to the Cowboys on October 23, the day after the teams' week 7 game against San Francisco.

Elliott may appeal this decision within three days.
