John Mayer And Carlos Santana Tribute Glen Campbell

It's why I'm releasing "Forever Loving You" in memory of Glen and for all of those who are losing or have lost someone they love.

Ashley, Cal and Shannon were members in their father's band during his 2012 Farewell Tour. He would hear a song once and immediately be able to commit it to memory.

In a career that spanned six decades, the musician released 21 Top 40 hits including "Rhinestone Cowboy", "Wichita Lineman" and "By The Time I Get To Phoenix".

Singer-songwriter Jimmy Webb, whose songs had provided many of Campbell's biggest hits, spoke with me in 2015 about what it was like to work with the singer and how hard it was to see his decline. But Campbell's interpretation of those songs was perfection.

"I was talking to him, going, 'Remember me?" "It is with the heaviest of hearts we announce the passing of Glen Travis Campbell, aged 81" was the post. So I got that, at least.

Campbell's career also got a boost at the end of the '60s when Hollywood decided this good-looking fella might do all right on screen, too. I thought he was great in it, funny, courageous, a guy who could hold his own against John Wayne's formidable Roster Cogburn.

Rather than seeming humbled by his Alzheimer's, Campbell seems oblivious to it. Though he was already suffering from the disease at the tour's outset, his family, some of whom played in his backing band, made a decision to continue with live dates as long as they could since playing music was the one area where Campbell initially appeared to retain most of his facilities. "I'll forever love you, Glen".

After seeing that, I found myself searching out videos on YouTube of Campbell in his prime, and the more I see, the more I realize how incredible he was.

While Glen Campbell married Kim Woollen less than a year after he broke up with Tanya Tucker, Tanya has said the "Rhinestone Cowboy" singer was "just on the rebound" with Woollen.
