Naib Subedar Jagram Singh Tomar was injured and later succumbed to his injuries.

The spokesman said army men effectively returned the fire from similar caliber weapons and the Pakistani guns fell silent at around 06.45 am.

One of the officers reportedly said, "At around 5 pm, Pakistani Army resorted to unprovoked mortar shelling and firing on forward posts along the LoC in Poonch district". He hailed from Tarsana village in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh.

Another soldier is reported to have been injured in Pakistan army's indiscriminate firing in the same sector. Army has undertaken search operations in the areas.

The official said due to heavy firing and mortar shelling by Pakistani troops, the residents living close to the LoC in Balakote sector could not take refuge in underground bunkers. On August 8, Sepoy Pawan Singh Sugra (21) was killed in unprovoked Pakistani firing.

Earlier in the day, a 40-year-old woman, Raqia Bi, was killed when a shell fired from across the border exploded in the verandah of her house around 5.20am.

According to defence sources, till August 1 this year, there have been 285 instances of ceasefire violation.

The fresh cross-LoC firing and shelling once again caused fear and panic among the border dwellers.
