Bus crash kills 36 on China expressway

A bus crash in China has killed at least 36 people and injured 13, according to state media.

The coach crashed at the Qinling tunnel in Ankang, a city in Shaanxi province, on Thursday night, according to the State Administration of Work Safety.

A long-distance passenger bus crashed into the wall of an expressway tunnel in China's northwest.

Rescue work was still under way as the injured people were taken to hospital. Twisted metal was strewn in front of the bus, several windows were broken and a front tyre was blown out.

The Minister of Public Security, Guo Shengkun, has urged local officials to find out the cause of the accident, Xinhua said.

The bus was carrying 49 passengers on its way to Luoyang from the city of Chengdu.

It is one of the accidents bus the deadliest in China since 2008, when 51 people had lost their lives during the fall of their vehicle in a ravine, in the south-west of the country.

Ltd, the coach has a designed carrying capacity of 51 people.
