Bills trade Sammy Watkins and Ronald Darby

Watkins had four catches for 39 yards in the Bills' 17-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings Thursday at New Era Field in Buffalo.

The additional picks provide Bills general manager Brandon Beane assets in a draft that looks as if it will have several top-end quarterback prospects.

The moves were also the right ones.

"I thought it was actually a pretty fair trade so I was excited about it", said Brad Hopkins, Bills fan.

Beane presaged such a deal when he decided not to pick up the fifth year of Watkins' original contract. Watkins joins Woods and slot receiver Cooper Kupp in three-receiver sets, putting Tavon Austin's role on the team in serious question.

The Buffalo Bills' roster looks different in many areas, but the team's makeover at wide receiver, cornerback and safety is eye opening.

Same goes for Kyle Williams and Lorenzo Alexander re-signing this offseason. The 2018 draft is supposed to be deeper at quarterback. So when trying to project this offense as a whole, it's hard to say they'll throw the ball more than 500-520 times.

The Bills lack depth in the wide receiver corps in terms of proven players. He has shown flashes, but not much brilliance. Manuel - neither of whom will be mistaken for Johnny Unitas - and managed to finish the year 18th in Reception NEP and 37th out 90 in Reception NEP per target among receivers with 50-plus target receivers.

McCoy argued there is "obviously a difference" between Watkins and Matthews, adding: "If you compare the two, it's obvious you can agree who is better".

As for Darby, it's a roll of the dice.

How will the moves impact your fantasy draft in a few weeks? Time will tell. But EJ Gaines could be that. Gaines from the Los Angeles Rams in separate deals. Rookie seasons aren't an end-all measuring stick for quarterbacks, but Goff's rookie campaign wasn't very good.

On defense, McDermott brings back the 4-3 scheme back to Orchard Park. They got cornerback E.J. Gaines and an '18 second-rounder from the Rams in the Watkins trade.

The Bills also traded cornerback Ronald Darby to the Philadelphia Eagles for wide receiver Jordan Matthews and a 2018 third-round draft pick. "I'll let [the decision of] where they lineup with [offensive coordinator] Rick [Dennison], Sean [McDermott] and those guys".

Matthews, 25, was the 42nd overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft out of Vanderbilt.

Buffalo used two first-round picks and a fourth-round pick to trade up and draft Watkins in 2014. He's received just 42 targets while playing on the outside, accumulating 27 receptions for 284 yards and one touchdown on those targets. Watkins has struggled staying healthy for most of his National Football League career.

Watkins dealt with nagging calf and ankle ailments in 2015, though he caught for 900 yards over the last nine games to register his first 1,000-yard season. Watkins had surgery twice on the injury. The trade comes less than 24 hours after Watkins played in the first preseason game of the year.

"You do have to consider everything", Beane said. You have to consider re-sign ability. It wasn't one single thing.

"You can make arguments either way", Beane said.

Darby and Watkins will be missed. Rookie Tre'Davious White, who has impressed throughout training camp, will likely take over the job. And keep in mind that would be a 30-50 pass increase over last season.
