Arsenal kicks-off English Premier League on a high

Alexis Sanchez Arsene Wenger

Arsenal staged their fightback after Okazaki came off in the 72nd minute.

But goals from substitutes, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud, in the 83rd and 85th minutes respectively, gave Arsenal the win in the opening night.

Olivier Giroud is confident that he can form a good strike partnership with Alexandre Lacazette at Arsenal this season.

He doesn't want to leave and I'm happy he wants to stay. Not only as a player, he's a fantastic player but as well in the group. "It was a relief for me he made a decision to stay".

The Emirates was absolutely hopping at this stage and there was only ever going to be one outcome, the often maligned, Olivier Giroud, like Ramsey before him, came off the bench and scored the victor to send the stadium into raptures. "You know, I must say I opened the door for him at some stage because I know that it's important for him to play".

"But as much as I can I will try to help the team to reach our target and tonight we needed this win as everybody knows the importance of the first game for confidence and we keep going". "Even when I played Giroud through the middle and him on the left he did very well on the left".

"That's unmanageable so to bring one more player in for the sake of it would be stupid, but if we find an exceptional one, we will do it". "[With] Ozil [too], we have plenty of the same type of players", he said, as reported by the Evening Standard.

Amid the joy - and relief - of victory, there was nonetheless plenty to concern Wenger, not least the manner in which his side conceded all three goals. They replaced Mohammed Elneny, who had assisted Lacazette to head in the first goal and Rob Holding.

Both sides swapped possession until the 56th minute when Vardy scored his second.

"We were quite good a year ago on corners".

"After that, we get the efficiency".

"You have to take some positives", he said. From af another corner, Leicester regained the lead after Vardy headed in the go-ahead goal.

"Sometimes because it's after World Cups or European Championships when we have many players who won't be ready to start the season."

Despite the admission of their manager, Arsenal supporters would like to see Mahrez put on the team's jersey, with some questioning why Wenger feels the aforementioned Wilshere would do a better job on the flanks than a proven wide-forward in Mahrez. He can be a nuisance for defenders. The future of Alexis Sanchez is unclear but Wenger has suggested he is prepared to keep the striker for a season and then let him leave on a free if he will not sign a £300,000-a-week contract.
