The United manager had outlined four positions he wanted to strengthen in to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward at the start of the transfer window, but only Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic have arrived at Old Trafford.

Hernandez is now likely to make his Premier League debut for the Hammers against his former club and said of the Red Devils ahead of the game, "It was a great experience [there] ... only happiness".

United enjoyed success in the cup competitions last term, winning both the Europa League and League Cup, but Carrick insists the club must improve on last season's sixth-place finish in the Premier League.

Defeat by Real Madrid in Tuesday's UEFA Super Cup match in Skopje was a setback, but Mourinho says his team are ready for the new season.

"I trust he is going to perform, so I think he is a fantastic signing".

"I don't say I know the league better because I have been in this league for a long time".

AC Milan and LA Galaxy are among the clubs reportedly interested in signing the veteran, but Mourinho is keen to add the striker to his forward options when he is fit again, although there is no rush to confirm a deal.

Manchester United are in discussions to re-sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the second half of the season when he recovers from a serious knee injury, manager Jose Mourinho confirmed on Friday.

"I just think that he was very clear by showing that what he did a year ago was not enough for him".

"He thinks he can do more at football's highest level so we are having conversations and discussing the possibility of him staying for the second part of the season".

"It's not urgent, not desperate to have it done or not done", said Mourinho.

However, Mourinho has lost a number of key players to long-term injury, including defenders Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw, and wing-back Ashley Young.

Mourinho is now preparing his team for their Premier League opener against West Ham United on Sunday afternoon as they look to kick off their season with a victory. We are going to try to win the title.

"I'm happy with the club's efforts".

"But I was not thinking of him because I never go to players who I think are the impossible mission".

"We always had that so my teams always had the goalscorer, we always had the guy that scores more goals, but then we had the winger that scored 15 goals, we had the midfield player who scored 10 goals, we had the central defender that scored five goals".

"We got a central midfielder, we got a striker".

"We are much better organised in the areas that support the first-team squad".
