Whatever Mufti said is immaterial, Prime Minister Modi matters: Omar Abdullah

Anyone having anti Pakistan stance belongs to pro India camp Dr Qasim

The J&K CM, while addressing reporters following the meet, said preservation of the Articles 370 and 35A is essential to maintain the faith of Kashmiris in the Indian political system.

The JK government's statement issued on Friday said that the prime minister had responded positively to the concerns raised by the chief minister.

The NC president's son and former chief minister Omar Abdullah - who on several earlier occasions has hit out at Mehbooba Mufti - said: "We can not afford to have Article 35A remove... we believe that there is an urgent need to create a wider consensus among parties to fight this battle together", after the PDP chief met Farooq Abdullah.

He also said that he heard that CM Mehbooba Mufti had said that if Article 35-A is removed, she will quit the chair.

The article has been challenged by a Delhi-based NGO, "We the Citizens", in the apex court where the central government had said last month there was need for a "larger debate" on the issue of declaring the article unconstitutional. It also stated that the prime minister assured the chief minister that the "Agenda of Alliance" agreed upon between PDP and BJP should form the basis of any discussion on the state.

In Srinagar, Opposition leaders met under the leadership of National Conference patron Farooq Abdullah on Monday in a bid to evolve a joint response.

Mehbooba is keen to build consensus against scrapping the Constitutional provision, which empowers the Jammu and Kashmir legislature to define the state's "permanent residents" and their special rights and privileges, sources said.

"What assurance did Mehbooba Mufti manage to get from the Prime Minister?"

It was inserted into the Constitution of India through a presidential order in 1954, to guarantee that the maharaja's ban on outsiders would remain. "None of us can go against that", Mufti had said earlier.

The chief minister who had flown to New Delhi Thursday met the PM today in Parliament office in the afternoon amid the row over a petition on striking down of Article 35A before a three bench of Supreme Court. Did the Prime Minister assure Mehbooba Mufti that BJP would stop officially terming Article 35A as "unconstitutional" - as their senior functionaries and spokespersons have been doing in seminars and while speaking to the media?
