Trump says he was surprised by Federal Bureau of Investigation search of Manafort home

Donald Trump I’m Not Firing Robert Mueller No Collusion With Russia by Charlie Spiering10 Aug 20170 10 Aug 2017 10 Aug 2017

The FBI's early morning raid on the home of Paul Manafort was also a surprising wake up call for President Donald Trump.

Manafort, who is facing increasing pressure from US special counsel Robert Mueller, divulged Trump Jr.'s meeting with Natalia Veselnitskaya about three months ago, Bloomberg reported. Whether the investigation ends up centering on potential financial crimes or possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, those former prosecutors said nailing the goods on Manafort will be key to Mueller's case.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents searched Paul Manafort's Alexandria, Virginia, home on July 26.

On Thursday, Manafort spokesman Jason Maloni said in a statement that Manafort is no longer represented by Washington law firm WilmerHale.

The expansion of Mueller's investigation into Trump's finances has raised questions about how far the special counsel can go in chasing down leads before the probe devolves into a fishing expedition beyond its intended scope. It also had to be demonstrated that evidence of the crime would be found in location of the search.

Though Trump said he hasn't even thought about firing Mueller, he did tell The New York Times in July that Mueller never should have been appointed in the first place. He resigned from the campaign in late August 2016 once reports surfaced about his work overseas. Gates also worked on the Trump campaign, transition and for a pro-Trump group.

"Mr Manafort has consistently cooperated with law enforcement and other serious inquiries and did so on this occasion as well", said the spokesman. That's what sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.

President Trump commented to reporters Thursday on his relationship with Attorney General Jeff Sessions in light of his past criticisms over Sessions recusing himself from the Russian Federation investigation.

The extent to which Manafort has been forthcoming with investigators is unclear.

The FBI raided Manafort's northern Virginia home for tax documents and banking records late last month, signalling that Mueller's investigation had expanded to look at potential money laundering or violations of worldwide tax laws.

The more conciliatory tone toward Mueller comes after months in which Trump steamed about the Russian Federation probe, even after he fired FBI chief James Comey in frustration at the investigation.
