"We didn't have power in the house, but we did have an old battery radio". Glen is one of the greatest voices there ever was in the business.

The musician from Arkansas overcame his dirt-poor roots to find fame and fortune in Hollywood.

Just months later he announced his retirement from music.

No funeral plans or Glen Campbell have yet been announced.

There are two documentaries now available that Campbell's fans should see, or even just people who are curious about him. In his 20s, he opened for The Doors and played with the Beach Boys.

He found solo success thanks to encouragement from Wilson with a cover of Buffy Sainte-Marie's Universal Soldier, and scored a massive hit in 1967 with songwriter Jimmy Webb's By the Time I Get to Phoenix.

The multi-talented entertainer acted alongside John Wayne in True Grit in 1969, hosted his own TV variety show, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, from 1969-1972 and earned an armload of awards, including Grammys, CMA and ACM awards.

Alongside the message was a heart-rending snap of Ashley, 30 - who is also a country singer - clasping her father's hand from his hospital bed.

The singer first announced his illness in 2011.

At the end of his final tour in November 2012, Campbell, would spend his time in a Nashville studio, where he put together his last album, "Adios". "It has a song a duet with Willie Nelson", said Pickett. In a statement posted to his official website, Glen's cause of death is said to have been a result of his 2011 diagnoses of Alzheimer's disease, with which he fought a "long and courageous battle".

"We knew this day was coming, but it still hurts no matter what", Pickett said.

The family requests memorial donations in Campbell's honor to support Alzheimer's research.
