Eagles trade Jordan Matthews to Buffalo, get CB Ronald Darby

Bills ship Sammy Watkins to Rams, get Jordan Matthews from Eagles

The Bills dealt a sixth-round pick to the Rams as part of the Watkins trade.

Darby was taken by the Bills in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Now playing in a contract year, Matthews will likely sign a long-term deal with the Bills at some point in the near future.

The Philadelphia Eagles on Friday executed a trade, and paid a steep price in the process, that they absolutely needed to make.

The Rams were previously hoping that the 5-foot-8 Tavon Austin would adapt to that role, but he spent the offseason recovering from wrist surgery and had been held out of training camp because of a hamstring injury. Our models have him down for 74 catches, 855 yards and 4.43 touchdowns for the coming season. The reason this is confusing is because Boldin has been a slot wide receiver nearly exclusively over the last two years playing over 70 percent of his snaps there.

The Sammy Watkins trade wasn't all the Buffalo Bills had in store for their roster, though.

The Buffalo Bills have acquired wide receiver Jordan Matthews from the Philadelphia Eagles, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

He joins a secondary that lacks top-notch cornerbacks. That's not going to get it done as a WR2/WR3 as Matthews has been in two of his three seasons. He has 153 catches for 2,459 yards and 17 touchdowns in three seasons, but topped 1,000 yards just once, in 2015.

Vanderbilt's all-time leading receiver will have to catch on with a new National Football League team. Aside from drop concerns, Matthews had been a quality receiver for Philly since he was drafted back in 2014.

The trade gives Buffalo two first and second round draft picks in 2018, ammunition for a front office that has been non-committal on starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

After Watkins' departure, the Bills now have Anquan Boldin, Zay Jones, Matthews, Rod Streater, Corey Brown, Andre Holmes, Brandon Tate, Dezmin Lewis, Brandon Reilly and Rashad Ross on its depth chart at wide receiver.
