Acura RLX Introduced Ahead of Monterey Debut

The 2018 Acura RLX receives the brand's new face

The redesigned 2018 Acura RLX is here, and it's the fastest and most capable sedan the company has ever built. The hood has been given a more sculpted finish, and the wheels are updated for the 2018 model year.

I'm skeptically excited, and I'm really happy Acura found a corporate grille that doesn't suck with that new down-pointing pentagon.

The auto comes in two variants, the 310 horsepower RLX with Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS) and the 377 horsepower RLX Sport Hybrid with Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD).

"This redesign of the 2018 Acura RLX is transformational, creating road presence and styling that better reflect underlying performance capabilities of the vehicle", said Jon Ikeda, Acura vice president & general manager.

And then there's the RLX Sport Hybrid with Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive or RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD for short.

Acura has also announced a 310 horsepower lower-spec model with a 10-speed automatic and an intriguing All-Wheel Steer system.

Ahead of its public debut during Monterey Car Week August 15-19, Acura has released images and preliminary information about the updated 2018 RLX.

You can have the Acura RLX one of two ways. Like the NSX supercar, it uses a 3.5-liter V-6 engine and three electric motors. If you love cars with all-wheel drive, the Sport Hybrid will be your choice, but it still generates the same 377 horsepower as the past year model.

If the non-hybrid variant is preferred, the RLX gets the same 3.5 litre powerplant but without the electric motors (obviously). As such, standard features include a Krell Audio System, surround view cameras, parking sensors, LED fog lights, remote engine start, ventilated and heated front seats, and heated rear seats and steering wheel.

Perhaps the biggest advancements for the 2018 RLX, aside from its styling changes, are in its AcuraWatch advanced driver assistance suite, which now includes Traffic Jam Assist, which applies the technology used in adaptive cruise control and low-speed following to alleviate the stresses of driving in tedious, gridlock traffic. It includes forward-collision warnings with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warnings, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, and road departure mitigation. A new Espresso interior color will be offered for the inside, and for the outside buyers will be able to choose two new premium colors: Brilliant Red Metallic and Majestic Black Pearl.
