4 injured in bridge collapse on N3 highway in Germiston

Gauteng MEC for transport Ismail Vadi says repairs will be done on the bridge as fast as possible

"We had an emergency meeting yesterday‚" said Joburg Metro Police spokesman Wayne Minnaar on Thursday.

Experts and removal teams worked throughout the night trying to clear the collapsed N3 bridge and determine the cause of the collapse. The collapsed bridge, located over the N3 between the M2 Gildenhuys and N3 Gillooly's interchanges, blocked the highway in both directions, resulting on motorists having to be diverted. Another truck was allegedly passing under the bridge as it collapsed and was very fortunate to escape with limited damage.

Five people were injured after a truck and a auto drove into the collapsed bridge in the early hours of yesterday morning.

"We heard rumours that there was a tremor in the area". This has ensured that we minimise the disruption of traffic flow on a route with an average daily traffic of 200 000 vehicles.

There were no fatalities.

Three people were seriously injured. "Delays in opening the road would have greatly inconvenienced thousands of motorists and delayed the movement of freight on what is one of our busiest roads in Gauteng", said Maswanganyi. "This may take as long as two days", SANRAL said.

Complete demolition of the bridge is now underway.

Engineers were already trying to ascertain the cause of the bridge collapse, Sanral said.

The scene has been handed over to SAPS for investigation.

The structure collapsed onto the M1 at Grayston Drive around 3.30pm on Wednesday, October 14.
