Isco close to new Madrid deal

Jose Mourinho's side succumbed to the brilliance of Real Madrid in the European Super Cup in Skopje on Tuesday night partly because of Isco's accomplished performance.

However, he could well have been wearing red in Skopje had United not allegedly turned down the chance to sign him for a freakish reason.

In the Uefa Super Cup, he scored the all-important second goal - finishing off a sublime team move - and was named man-of-the-match.

It was towards the end of Sir Alex's Ferguson's reign during 2013, when United sent a senior scout to assess Isco, who was playing at Malaga.

'They'll end up taking him off Man United, whether it's next year, the year after.

Manchester United's scouting report on Isco concluded that he did not merit further pursuit: "He's good, but not quite quick enough and his head is too big for his body".

United boss Jose Mourinho had been hoping to sign the Spain global this summer but Isco is happy to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu. But with Real backing off, de Gea won't now receive a top-up to his modest £200,000-a-week wages with the paper saying that the United hierarchy are "happy to wait for another few months before resuming talks over a new deal".

Isco late-season form ensured Real Madrid maintained their lead at the top of La Liga to secure their first league title since 2011/12.

You've got a £50m budget to pick 11 players, with all the biggest new signings ready and raring to go ahead of a mouthwatering new Premier League campaign.
