Siemian, Lynch share top quarterback spot in Broncos' first depth chart

Report: Trevor Siemian winning Broncos' QB job easily

Broncos Head Coach Vance Joseph said he's preaching patience in naming a starting quarterback this season, but Trevor Siemian will take the temporary title as he starts Thursday's preseason opener against the Chicago Bears.

In the three games he played last season, Lynch didn't do awful but he didn't put up starter stats either.

Does that mean that Siemian is ahead of Paxton Lynch in their summer-long derby to be the team's Week 1 starting quarterback?

Last season, Siemian was the starter for a majority of the season but we saw signs of potential from Lynch. Joseph also said that, while Siemian will get the start Thursday, Lynch will get the start for the second preseason game no matter how well Siemian performs against the Bears.

The Broncos' first exhibition will kick off at 6:00 p.m. MDT at Soldier Field in Chicago.

"He's first out, he's been first all training camp".

"I think Trevor's earned that much, you know, to be the first guy out", Joseph said.

In that fateful second preseason game of 2016 - also against the 49ers - Siemian was steady, while Mark Sanchez was a fountain of fumbles, continuing the turnover trend he established in training camp. If Lynch comes up short again against Siemian for a second year, the there might be another problem for the Broncos.

A similar play past year by Lynch drew the ire of then-coach Gary Kubiak, who implored Lynch to "give your guys a chance!"

Monday's practice inside the Pat Bowlen Fieldhouse provided a typically muddled outlook. Siemian was steadier and had a better completion percentage.

Instead of the first-team offense going against the No. 1 defense, the top offense faced a scout-team defense. Lynch appeared in three games-making two starts-and threw for 497 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

After 11 days of training camp, Siemian said he has a good idea of the expectations. Perhaps preseason games will clear it up.
