Son says didn't tell Trump of Russian Federation lawyer meeting

U.S. President Donald Trump waves as walks on the South Lawn of the White House upon his return to Washington U.S. from the G20 Summit in Hamburg

Trump Jr. said nothing came from the meeting and he was unaware that Veselnitskaya was possibly Kremlin-connected. He also described the woman Trump Jr. would later meet as a "Russian government attorney".

The emails have fuelled speculation that the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government to win the 2016 presidential election. "This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russian Federation and its government's support for Mr. Trump-helped along by Aras and Emin", he added.

It appears Donald Trump first met Goldstone, a British-born former tabloid reporter and president of Oui 2 Entertainment, during the 2013 Miss Universe pageant in Moscow, an event that had been co-owned by the now-president.

"My son Donald did a good job last night".

Later Tuesday, Trump Jr. told Fox News that he did not tell his father about the meeting, after the talk failed to yield compromising information about Clinton, Trump's 2016 election rival. The President's attorney insists Don Jr. did nothing wrong.

The damaging information was "part of Russian Federation and its government support for Mr. Trump", the email to Donald Trump Jr. said.

U.S. intelligence agencies have accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of approving a hacking and influence campaign to sway the vote.

The Justice Department and Congress are investigating alleged Russian interference in the election and any possible collusion with Trump's campaign.

Mueller spokesman Peter Carr declined to comment on the emails, citing the ongoing investigation.

After the interview, the president on Twitter praised his son's television appearance. "Who could have predicted an email scandal would taint a presidential campaign?".

"[That] also gets you into the same basket of inappropriate conversations, because if she's working on behalf of Russian Federation to get rid of sanctions, that's a similarly sensitive situation", Cuomo said. Both Trump Jr. and Veselnitskaya have claimed that the primary topic of the meeting was the Magnitsky Act - a law that provides for sanctions against Russian officials.

In response, Trump Jr. thanked Goldstone and said, "If it's what you say I love it especially later in the summer". The two men also had preliminary discussions about building a Trump Tower in Moscow that fell through.

The president has voiced support for his son in a brief statement and a pair of tweets since details on the meeting went public, but has not elaborated on what he knows about it or whether he thought it was appropriate. "That email is disturbing", Sen.

But just moments after Trump Jr. tweeted the emails, The New York Times published them. Citing three people with knowledge of the email, the Times reported that Rob Goldstone, who connected Trump Jr. with the Russian lawyer, sent the email to Trump Jr. pointing to the Russian government as a source of potential information that could damage Clinton.
