Bid to impeach Donald Trump launched

Donald Trump Jr. received an email saying that a Kremlin-connected oligarch had information on Hillary Clinton that could help his father

A Democratic lawmaker on Wednesday formally introduced an article of impeachment against President Donald Trump, accusing the president of obstructing justice with his firing of FBI Director James Comey in May.

The president's eldest son on Tuesday released a series of emails purportedly sent between himself and Rob Goldstone, the man who told The Associated Press he set up a meeting a year ago between the young Trump and Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya. "It does provide for the removal of a President for High Crimes and Misdemeanors", Sherman said.

"Perhaps uncontrollable impulses will be controlled". And perhaps the danger our nation faces will be ameliorated. Trump has adamantly denied any suggestion that he and his team colluded with Russian Federation to sway the USA election, but recent events moved two Democratic representatives to take a first formal step in the impeachment process. He wrote he's optimistic that "if the impulsive incompetency continues, then eventually-many, many months from now-Republicans will join the impeachment effort".

This week has heightened the sense of crisis surrounding the White House.

Donald Trump Jr, acknowledged that he met with a Russian lawyer during the presidential election campaign.

Sherman argues that Trump's abrupt firing of James Comey as Federal Bureau of Investigation director in May amounts to obstructing justice and "high crimes and misdemeanors" amid the probes of whether Trump's campaign colluded with the Russian government to swing the election.

That amounted to obstruction of justice, Mr Sherman explained, which was grounds for impeachment.

White House deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders called the filing "utterly and completely ridiculous and a political game at its worst".

The move has also received little support among fellow Democrats who fear it will only divide opposition to an embattled president, embolden his supporters and end in failure. "It does provide for the removal of a President for High Crimes and Misdemeanors".

The next step for Mr Sherman's articles of impeachment will be to persuade the House judiciary committee to allow them to go forward for a full vote in the House of Representatives. They now hold 240 of the 194 seats in the House of Representatives.

Other Democrats have expressed concern about Sherman's effort to impeach Trump over possible ties to Russian Federation, and the resolution had only one cosponsor, Rep. Al Green, D-Tex.

The possibility of impeachment is a long way off, but two House Democrats clearly think they have a case. Republicans have a 24-seat advantage. However, federal authorities said they had definitive evidence that the Kremlin meddled in the United States presidential election. In a memo leaked by Comey through an intermediary to The New York Times, Comey said he felt pressured by Trump to drop his investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn. I see this as the right thing to do.

Nate Silver, statistician, writer, and founder and editor-in-chief of the website FiveThirtyEight, published a painstakingly detailed article at the end of May about the likelihood that Trump will be impeached.

A member of the administration, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: "The only way he leaves office is if one day he wakes up and just decides he has had enough".

The considerable barriers to success mean Mr Trump's allies are confident their man will not be ousted.
