Six dead, 31 missing as tourist boat sinks in reservoir

Six people have died, 16 are missing and about 133 people have been rescued, according to the Washington Post.

Rescue workers searched on Monday for two people missing after a tourist boat sank in a reservoir in north-central Colombia, killing seven.

It sank on Sunday afternoon in the El Penol reservoir in the tourist town of Guatape, where Colombian and foreign tourists take leisure cruises.

Survivors told local media that the boat, called El Almirante, appeared to be overloaded and none of the passengers on board were wearing life vests.

"We don't know what happened, 5 minutes after the departure everything was fine when we heard a loud explosion, ran out of power and watch how half of the boat was sinking".

Firefighters from neighbouring cities and air force pilots have been searching for survivors after nearby boats and jet skis rushed to the scene, pulling people from the boat as it went down.

Passengers are seen onboard the tourist boat Almirante in the Reservoir of Penol in Guatape municipality in Antioquia.

"At the moment we have no information to establish why it sank", he said.

Local officials in Guatape invited people to honor the victims by bringing a light to the town's famous Sembradora de Sueños ("the Dream Planter") statue, which is located by the water.

The admiral in charge of the search, Juan Francisco Herrera, said on Blu Radio that more divers would arrive today "to carry out a bigger search inside the boat to determine whether there are people trapped in there". Moncada said the hardest part for scuba divers is to safely search the area around the first deck of the boat.

Santos also said that "there are no children" among the dead so far.

"What makes you angry is there are no controls by the government", he said.

No fewer than nine people were killed when a tourist boat capsized on a lake near Medellin on Sunday, Colombian officials have confirmed.
