Doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital, where Rep. Scalise is being treated, discussed his condition on Friday saying that they believed he would be in the hospital for a considerable amount of time, possibly weeks.

Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center said it's a "good possibility" that the Louisiana Republican will be able to return to work in his full capacity. The wound shattered bones, tore organs and caused severe bleeding. He remains sedated but has been able to respond to his family.

Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, arrived at the hospital via helicopter in shock, with intense internal bleeding, Sava said.

"The thoughts and prayers of the entire LSU community are with Rep. Scalise, his family and all of those injured".

"We've had a very, very divided country for many years", Trump said.

The bullet reportedly pierced his hip during baseball practice may have done a lot of damage and the hospital said he's had to have a number of transfusions.

Scalise, who underwent a third surgery Thursday, is listed in critical condition after being shot through the hip.

President Donald Trump, who visited Scalise in the hospital on Wednesday, sent a video message that played at the start of the game. He sustained minor injuries to one of his wrists, elbows and lower back in the process. He's been undergoing repeat surgeries.

Republicans and Democrats joined in a spirited, friendly rivalry Thursday at their annual Congressional Baseball game, many fresh from the penetrating horror of the ballfield shooting rampage a day earlier and all playing in honor of their grievously wounded colleague.
