Ronaldo's Portugal held by Mexico at Confed Cup

More confusion was caused when Argentine referee Nestor Pitana called a review for unclear reasons after defender Cedric Soares's deflected shot in the 86th gave Portugal a 2-1 lead.

Undeterred, Portugal officially opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark via a move which started with mercurial forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

Play continued for about 10 seconds until the ball got to Nani and he scored from inside the area after a shot by Ronaldo hit the crossbar.

Earlier, Javier Hernandez stooped low to nod home with four minutes of the first half remaining to cancel out Ricardo Quaresma's opener.

But Portugal's talisman was at his best in an action-packed first half in his team's opening match, with hosts Russian Federation and New Zealand still to come in the group.

The second half became more defensive as both sides wanted to protect what they had, and Ochoa produced a huge save from substitute Andre Silva, whose header was heading for the bottom corner, only to be brilliantly scooped away one-handed by the Malaga stopper. Cristiano Ronaldo ran at the Mexican defense before finding Quaresma for an easy finish. While Sunday's performance was by no means a disaster - Portugal drew all three group games on the way to winning Euro 2016 - he'll want those around Ronaldo to be more supportive of the superstar.

Ronaldo obliged after Carlos Salcedo made an error to allow him in on goal before finding Quaresma in acres of space who collected the ball calmly before waltzing past Guillermo Ochoa to score the opener. "I think that we communicate well and we have a good understanding, and that leads to these good results".

The assistants duly looked it over, and awarded what looked to be a correct offside decision against Portugal, disallowing the goal.

Former New York Red Bulls Head Coach Juan Carlos Osorio has enjoyed great success with Mexico in his two years in charge of the national team.

But Hector Moreno's late header denied Portugal the win in their first match in Group A. Both teams are in the contested Group A of the competition and should deliver an exciting affair.

At the end of the match, the teams again exchanged goals - the Portuguese efforts of Cedric, it seemed, snatched victory but for a few seconds before the final whistle Moreno flanking flow and saved Mexico from defeat.

One "clear error" might be overturned every four or five games, Federation Internationale de Football Association head of refereeing Massimo Busacca suggested previous year.
